THE QUEST 2024 is sadly cancelled

Dear Fans of Scouting Adventure,

A Happy New Year to everyone and especially to all those who have participated, supported or somehow contributed to The Quest and The Grimsdyke Hikes over the years, on which topic we have some news.

Both events have been run annually, almost without interruption, for over 30 years. But, despite regular efforts to recruit new support, it has been much the same core team that has been managing them for the last 20 and which now finds itself stretched unsustainably.

With no additional resources forthcoming, the team has had to make some difficult decisions about the future of these events.

The Quest 2024

Regrettably we have to confirm that 2024 edition of The Quest incident hike, normally planned for the beginning of February each year, will have to be cancelled due to lack of available resources. And any future versions of the event being will be entirely dependent on new support coming forward.

The Grimsdyke Hikes 2024

Our hope is that The Grimsdyke Hikes, planned for November 2024, will still be able to go ahead but this event is similarly under-resourced and its future continuity after 2024 can only be assured if new support can be found.

While help on the day is always welcome and necessary, the bulk of the work actually goes on beforehand: planning and confirming routes, visiting locations and liaising with landowners, setting and collecting tags and flags and so on. The timings, processes and responsibilities for all the required tasks are well-organised and documented. Some tasks can be handled remotely but, of course, others do require physically visiting the courses.

The feedback we get from Scouts, leaders and parents about both events is hugely positive and convinces us of the value and demand for them to continue. But we need help.

The Quest is the ultimate incident hike, attracting nearly 300 Scouts, Guides, Explorers and Helpers  from the Misbourne Valley and beyond. The Quest has been up and running annually since 1988.

The Quest provides a truly challenging, fun and rewarding opportunity, testing a unique combination of skills.

Each year the event has theme. We've had everything from James Bond to Royal Weddings

The Event

The Quest tests a unique combination of navigation, physical and mental tasks and teamwork. Navigating cross-country, teams must find Incident Bases where they compete in fun challenges to collect points.

The teams with the most points, wins!

Be Prepared!

The Quest is a fun and rewarding event and as competitive as you want. But be prepared for a genuine challenge. The total distance walked in about 16km and much of it will be in the dark.

The hike takes place in just about any kind of weather. After walking, teams normally get beck to HQ well after midnight, having had a tiring - but fun - day.

The Quest highly recommend that Shadows, Hikers and Base Manager download and familiarise themselves with this very useful phone app.

It can provide a precise location that is easily communicable without the need for grid reference etc.
